Making Vinyl Better

We are constantly striving to improve the environmental profile of our vinyl products through local and international initiatives. For example, we repurpose our vinyl waste (and that of other flooring manufacturers) to make new products - such as the backing for Flotex and Westbond carpet tiles.

How It's Made
• Our Step range contains up to 60% controlled controlled vinyl waste in the backing.
• Many of the products in the Step range contain Step Crystals. They are made from recycled material so enhance the environmental performance of the product.
• We produce all our vinyl in Europe where it meets the highest possible current and future REACH compliance standards for chemical content.
• Of all the electricity we buy, 100% comes from renewable sources. This means our vinyl production sites are part of an effective environmental management system and achieve ISO14001 certification.

How It Performs
• We use smart material constructions and durable finishes on our vinyl. A micro-embossing technology reduces the need for chemical cleaning and increases the floor's lifespan.

HSE Compliance – Wet Pendulum test ≥36
All Step floors are tested using the TRRL Pendulum test, the preferred test method of the HSE which is used to assess the slip resistance of a floor surface. Floors can be tested with different rubber sliders to assess either footwear or barefoot use. Using this test, a Pendulum test value (PTV) of 36 or higher is considered to offer a low slip risk.

Surestep and Safestep R11 and R12 products offer Wet Pendulum test values of ≥36 for footwear applications. In addition, Surestep Laguna and Safestep Aqua offer Wet Pendulum test values of ≥36 for barefoot use areas.

EN 13845
Forbo Step complies with EN 13845 due to the use of slip resistant particles throughout the wear layer of the product. This standard specifies the requirements that must be met to ensure durable slip resistance throughout the guaranteed life of the product.

”R” scale
Floors are often evaluated for slip resistance by using the “R” scale, which is linked to the DIN 51130 standard. In simple terms, the angle of a ramp covered with the floor covering and lubricated with oil is increased until the person walking down it slips. The tested floor covering is given an “R” rating based on the angle at which the tester slips. The scale starts at R9 (the lowest slip resistance class) and runs to R13 (the highest slip resistance class). Step products offer classifications from R10 to R12, a comprehensive range of products.

DIN 51097 – barefoot areas
For products used in barefoot areas, DIN 51097 applies. The test method is similar to DIN 51130, but for this test, the surface is covered with a ‘soap and water’ solution which is more relevant to barefoot applications. The Step range offers unique solutions up to the highest class in barefoot safety performance.

Slip Resistance Explained


A Versatile Performance Product

Step is a heterogeneous product where each layer adds functionality to the product, ensuring optimal performance.

Compact Calendared Backing

The construction begins with the compact calendared backing that provides the ability to withstand dynamic loads and minimises residual indentation. This layer contains up to 60% of controlled recycled waste, contributing to the products environmental credentials. The flexible glass fleece layer reinforces the product and provides optimal dimensional stability; but it’s in the wear layer of the product where the lifetime slip resistance performance is designed in. The presence of Step Crystals throughout the wear layer ensures continuing slip resistance.

PUR protection
The final top coat is a matt PUR protective layer which optimises appearance retention even under high traffic conditions and protects against scratches.

PUR Pearl
Most Forbo Step products are finished with PUR Pearl, a finish that is stain and chemical resistant and provides an ideal finish for cleaning and maintenance.

Step Crystals
Many of the products in the Forbo Step range include Step Crystals which offer a clear and light aesthetic and also reduced soiling. As Step Crystals are made from recycled material, they also enhance the environmental performance of the collection (see picture).

Wetroom Applications
For Wetroom applications, Forbo Step offers ranges featuring embossed structures which are organic in design, hygienic and comfortable underfoot.
