Sustainability

Marmoleum, a natural talent

There’s a craft to making really good Marmoleum. Fortunately, we’ve had over 150 years’ experience in getting it just right.

How it's made
• Marmoleum is made from an average of 97% natural raw materials, 62% of those are renewable within 10 years and 29% are renewable within ONE year.
• At the heart of Marmoleum is the flax plant from which we derive the key ingredient, linseed oil.
• The use of natural, renewable materials means that the weighted average of our Marmoleum product range is CO2 neutral floor covering (cradle to gate).
• The new Marmoleum Cocoa range goes one step further by adding a seventh natural ingredient, upcycled cocoa shells from a Dutch chocolate producer.
• Marmoleum is also made with 43% recycled and reused content, to reduce the need for virgin raw material.
• At the end of its long life, Marmoleum is 100% biodegradable under controlled conditions.
• Marmoleum has been awarded with a large array of international environmental certificates such as the Nordic Swan, the Blue Angel and Nature Plus. In addition Marmoleum floor covering improves the environmental and wellbeing score in building ratings such as LEED, SKA, BREEAM and the WELL building standard.

How it performs
• Marmoleum performs well from the minute it’s installed, but it also becomes stronger over time, making it more and more durable.
• We finish Marmoleum with Topshield finish, which together with its natural bacteriostatic properties, means the floor is hygienic and needs less cleaning with less harmful chemicals.
• Because it lasts for so long and is so easy to clean, Marmoleum has a very low cost of ownership.
• Approved by Allergy UK and with TVOC’s 30 times lower than the European norm, you can relax knowing that Marmoleum contributes to a healthier indoor environment.
• Through our Back to the Floor scheme, we recycle installation off-cuts into new Marmoleum at our plants in Scotland and the Netherlands.

Allergy UK

Creating Better Indoor Environments

Forbo's Marmoleum has been awarded the prestigious Allergy UK Seal of Approval as, with the correct cleaning and maintenance regime, it won't harbour dust mites, contributing to a better indoor environment for all.

To find out more about why Marmoleum has been awarded the Seal of Approval click here

Infection Control
Marmoleum's ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria stems from the natural raw materials that go into its production, namely linseed oil. The bacteriostatic qualities of Marmoleum are an inherent property of the product and won't diminish over time. Marmoleum provides peace of mind and constant protection from the moment it is installed.

Allergy UK Seal of Approval

150+ years of Linoleum

150+ years of Linoleum

Frederick Walton
Frederick Walton discovered linoleum and patented its manufacturing process in 1863. It is quite remarkable that a product, discovered in the days of gas lights and horse-drawn carriages, is still used in applications for which it was originally designed, such as flooring in healthcare and educational facilities. Marmoleum is the market leader in this specific resilient flooring category, with manufacturing plants in Kirkcaldy, Scotland and Assendelft, Netherlands.

Impressive references
Over 100 years and more, linoleum has found its way into an incredibly large number of buildings all over the world. It was the dining hall flooring for the famous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco, CA, as well as the elegant White House in Washington, DC. Not to be outdone, linoleum is also installed in the Kremlin in Moscow, the German Reichstag and Buckingham Palace. Even Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam (1938) featured linoleum, as did Sorbonne University and the institute of Madame Curie.

Marmoleum is still found today in many public buildings worldwide from the new opera house in Olso or the latest tribal art museum from Jean Nouvel in Paris. Marmoleum remains a classic that is loved by Architects because of its authenticity and versatility. Take inspiration from our 60+ Marmoleum References

Making Marmoleum
The craft of manufacturing linoleum has evolved over the last 150 years. Forbo has been driving this development through its Marmoleum brand. Making Marmoleum is an art, which is not learned at any trade or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum.
