A healthcare flooring solution from Forbo with Marmoleum

Natural raw materials

Marmoleum is a flooring product made primarily from renewable natural resources. The top layer is linoleum, a bio-based, ecologically produced material made from 97% natural raw materials.

The craft of manufacturing linoleum has evolved over the last 150 years. Forbo has been driving this development through its Marmoleum brand. Making Marmoleum is an art, which is not learned at any trade or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum.

What's important

What's important?

✔ Infection control
✔ Phthalate free
✔ Prevent the growth of bacteria

Infection control

Marmoleum's ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria stems from the natural raw materials that go into its production, specifically linseed oil. An inherent property of the product, the anti-bacterial qualities of Marmoleum won't diminish over time, giving peace of mind and constant protection from the moment it is installed.

Independent testing by the University of Glasgow has proven that Marmoleum has a unique suitability for a diverse range of environments where hygiene and control of bacteria such as MRSA or E. coli is an everyday concern.

Infection control

"Most MRSA infections occur in people who've been in hospitals or other healthcare settings."

Phthalate free

Phthalates are a family of chemical compounds primarily used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or vinyl flexible and pliant. The phthalates widely selected to soften vinyl are used because of their strong performance, durability and stability. Because they are used to soften vinyl and make it flexible, in these applications they are called “plasticisers.”

Exposure to some kind of phthalates has been linked to the rise in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Created from natural, renewable materials, Marmoleum flooring is the most sustainable resilient flooring available.

Marmoleum contains no phthalates, no plasticisers and no mineral oil.

Naturally prevent the growth of bacteria

Thanks to its natural raw materials, Marmoleum is naturally bacteriostatic and independently proven to inhibit the growth and spread of infections such as MRSA, Norovirus, Acinetobacter baumannii and C Difficile helping to contribute to a healthier and more hygienic environment.

An inherent property of the product, the bacteriostatic qualities of Marmoleum won't diminish over time, giving peace of mind and constant protection from the moment it is installed.

Lasting performance

Topshield has unique characteristics that allows the surface to be repaired or refreshed after years of use or accidents, creating a floor with lasting performance over time.

Topshield has been designed to create a ‘ready to use’ Marmoleum that requires no initial maintenance or polymer application and is even more resistant to dirt pick-up, less prone to wear and has improved resistance to scratches and stains.

Dementia

Designing for dementia

Forbo has partnered with Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC), an international centre which draws on 25 years of global research and practice, to identify which products in our portfolio can contribute to improving the quality of life for people with dementia.

Flooring is one of the most essential factors in determining a basis for designing a dementia environment as it has much impact on safety and orientation of a space, giving patients confidence, security and independence.

Dementia

Dementia friendly flooring selection guidelines

• Tonal contrast is critical for materials to be seen against each other.
• Both DSDC and BS8300:2009 recommend a difference of 30 degrees of LRV between critical surfaces such as floors to walls and doors to walls.
• Adjoining flooring should be tonally similar to reduce the risk of falls.
• Flooring LRVs should be within 8 degrees of each other (less is better) and no more than 10 degrees
• Transition strips should match the tones of both surfaces with an ideal difference of no more than 3 degrees of LRV step difference.
• It is recommended that skirtings contrast with both the wall and the door where possible.

Dementia friendly flooring

Do's

• Develop one tonally continuous flooring surface
• Aim to reduce impact sound
• Avoid sensory overload
• Avoid sparkle & pattern
• Opt for matt finishes
• Provide good tonal transition between floors

Don'ts

• Don’t use patterned floors
• Don’t use sparkly floors (perceived as a wet surface / slip risk)
• Don’t use flecked floors (may be perceived as something to pick up)
• Don’t use logos or brands (perceived as an obstacle)
• Don’t use any flooring with a high gloss or shiny finish
(also perceived as being Slippery)
• Don’t use aluminum or brass reflective trims or transitions
(could cause high-stepping)

Healthcare environments

Hospitals

Hospitals have very specific requirements for all types of interior finishes. The floor is one of the most important interior aspects, because hospitals get a lot of traffic (both wheeled and foot traffic). Hygiene and long lasting performance of the floor are essential in this healthcare environment.
