Marmoleum in Education

Education

Marmoleum caring for your education

From nurseries to universities, educational establishments demand attractive, hardwearing, low maintenance safe and sustainable flooring solutions. Durability and hygiene are important in areas used by children and young adults.

Phthalate free! Exposure to some kind of phthalates has been
linked to the rise in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Created from natural, renewable materials, Marmoleum does not contain PVC or Phthalates providing a safe and low emitting floor. Marmoleum is also approved by Allergy UK as it does not harbour dust mites.

The weighted average of our Marmoleum product range is CO2 neutral (cradle to gate) - without offsetting, which means it contributes to the Government’s target to achieve net-zero by 2050. Marmoleum can also help with schemes such as LEED, SKA, BREEAM and the WELL building standard.

Our most sustainable flooring solution, Marmoleum offers a wealth of colour options, scuff and scratch resistance, coupled with the possibility to repair damaged surfaces.

“Providing a healthy and safe school environment for children and young adults”

Natural raw materials

Marmoleum is a flooring product made primarily from renewable natural resources. The top layer is linoleum, a bio-based, ecologically produced material made from 97% natural raw materials.

The craft of manufacturing linoleum has evolved over the last 150 years. Forbo has been driving this development through its Marmoleum brand. Making Marmoleum is an art, which is not learned at any trade or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum.

Environment

Healthy indoor environment

Healthy indoor environment

Children and young adults spend most of their time indoors, either at home or in school/university - spending approximately 35-40 hours per week, for 9 months of the year inside an educational facility. The measured indoor air quality parameters indicate that children can be subjected to large concentrations of CO2 and exposed to increased levels of particulate VOC’s and biological contaminants.

Asthma and allergic diseases are the most prevalent chronic diseases among children and have increased quite rapidly in the last decades. The findings cannot be explained by genetic changes and are more likely to be due to changes in environmental exposure and/or in lifestyle.

In a safe indoor environment, floors are non-toxic, low emitting and compliant to all international standards. Forbo’s Marmoleum sheet and tile floor coverings (and 100% solvent free adhesive products) are ideal for school applications, delivering healthier, safer and longer-lasting floors.

"Clean and healthy classrooms are crucial in education"

Clean floors

Thanks to its natural raw materials, Marmoleum is naturally bacteriostatic and independently proven to inhibit the growth and spread of infections such as MRSA, Norovirus, Acinetobacter baumannii and C Difficile helping to contribute to a healthier and more hygienic environment. An inherent property of the product, the bacteriostatic qualities of Marmoleum won't diminish over time, giving peace of mind and constant protection from the moment it is installed.

With the correct cleaning regime, our Marmoleum floor coverings will not harbour allergens or house dust mites.

Allergy UK approved flooring

Our Marmoleum floor coverings have been awarded the prestigious “Seal of Approval” from Allergy UK as, with the correct cleaning regime, they will not harbour allergens or house dust mites.

A report by Allergy UK estimates that there are at least 12 million people “allergic to their own home” with 58% citing house dust mites as a key trigger. Therefore the importance of floor coverings in creating better indoor environments should not be overlooked.

It’s also an issue that shouldn’t be ignored by educational, healthcare, office establishments or in social care, in fact any place where people are likely to spend a prolonged period.

Raw Materials

Phthalate free

Phthalates are a family of chemical compounds primarily used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or vinyl flexible and pliant. The phthalates widely selected to soften vinyl are used because of their strong performance, durability and stability. Because they are used to soften vinyl and make it flexible, in these applications they are called “plasticisers.”

Exposure to some kind of phthalates has been linked to the rise in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Created from natural, renewable materials, Marmoleum flooring is the most sustainable resilient flooring available.

Marmoleum contains no phthalates, no plasticisers and no mineral oil.

Durable

Lasting performance

Topshield has unique characteristics that allows the surface to be repaired or refreshed after years of use or accidents, creating a floor with lasting performance over time.

Topshield has been designed to create a ‘ready to use’ Marmoleum that requires no initial maintenance or polymer application and is even more resistant to dirt pick-up, less prone to wear and has improved resistance to scratches and stains.

Topshield is Forbo Flooring's high performance UV-finish which is applied to all Marmoleum floor coverings. Topshield prevents staining, scuffing and scratching for lasting appearance retention and provides for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Topshield is also naturally bacteriostatic, resistant to chemicals and hand disinfectants, making it an ideal solution for all heavy traffic environments such as schools, healthcare, offices and public buildings.

Acoustic Marmoleum

Turn down the volume

The best way to reduce sound is at the source. Acoustic floors have an important contribution in reducing noise in buildings. Our acoustic linoleum floors create a healthy environment by combining sustainability with excellent sound reduction properties.

For schools, proper acoustic performance creates a quiet atmosphere (even if children are running in the corridors) to help children learn.

"Poor acoustics equals 24 absenteeism days per year."

Acoustic Linoleum

Our acoustic linoleum floors create a healthy environment by combining sustainability with excellent sound reduction properties. We offer 2 acoustic linoleum solutions:

Marmoleum Decibel
Marmoleum Decibel provides an impact sound reduction of 18dB. It is 2.5 mm Marmoleum laminated onto a 1 mm layer of polyolefin foam. Marmoleum Decibel is available in 27 colours from the Marmoleum Marbled and Marmoleum Solid collection.

Marmoleum Acoustic
Marmoleum Acoustic has a total thickness of 4mm and reduces impact sound by 14dB. It is a twinlayer linoleum built up from 2mm of Marmoleum and 2mm Corkment backing and is available in 6 colours. Using Marmoleum Acoustic reduces installation costs as it can be installed in one go, avoiding the need to first lay Corkment and the Marmoleum.

How does it work?

The best way to reduce sound is at the source. That’s why acoustic floors are key when it comes to reducing noise in buildings.

Sound is generated by almost all everyday activity. Impact sound is generated by traffic contacting the floor surface. The floor is therefore also the main area where acoustic performance can be influenced.

Impact sound made on the floor in 1 room is transmitted through the floor into rooms below. To measure the impact sound reduction achieved by a floor covering, impact noise is generated with a hammer machine directly onto a concrete floor slab in an emission room and the sound level (S1) is recorded in the reception room below.

The floor covering is then laid onto the concrete slab, and the same impact noise is made on the floor covering, and the new sound level (S2) is recorded. The impact sound reduction (EN ISO 717-2) is the difference, measured in decibels, between the 2 sound levels recorded.

The impact sound reduction of Forbo's acoustic project vinyl and linoleum floors varies from 14 to 19dB.

Classrooms

Within both schools and universities, classrooms are visited most often. Choosing the right flooring solution for classrooms is more important than you think. Multiple aspects need to be taken into account, like noise reduction, hygiene, colour choice and easiness to clean.
