ESD & Cleanroom Flooring

Colorex EC

Colorex EC is Ideal for laboratories, IT-rooms and cleanrooms . Colorex EC satisfies the strictest requirements for particle release behaviour, helping to reduce any threat of contamination.

Reducing the generation of electrostatic charges is the main purpose of control measures in ESD protected areas (EPA). In such areas like electronics assembly, mechatronics and datacenters the right floor covering plays a crucial role. It does not only drain electrostatic charges from personnel and equipment, but it also reduces the generation of charges there where they occur, at the interface between the shoe soles and the floor.

    Colorex EC

Colorex EC is an electrostatic conductive flooring tile with permanent ESD properties throughout it's life, regardless the humidity level of the area. Because of the dense of network of conductive veins, static charges flow easily through the floor to earth.

Norms and Certifications

Norms and Certifications

In order to provide our customers with highest safety, we measure and report the conductivity of each production batch. As a result of this quality control procedure, we establish a measurement report showing the distribution of conductivity values within a single batch. These reports are available to the customer upon request.

The homogeneous structure of Colorex SD/EC with its dense network of conductive veins is a guarantee for lifetime conductivity. Performance is permanent, independent from air humidity or temperature conditions

In conjunction with appropriate ESD footwear, Colorex EC is fully compliant with the personnel grounding requirements specified in the IEC 61340-5-1 and ANSI/ESD S20.20 standards for ESD Protected Areas (EPA):
- System resistance Person / Footwear / Flooring System < 35 MOhm
- Body Voltage < 100V

Floor Care

Floor Care for Colorex

Forbo Colorex SD/EC is comprised of conductive coated chips, which are pressed and formed into a solid homogeneous vinyl block, stable in size and dimension, and then sliced to assure a highly flexible tile of dense construction. Colorex SD/EC is dimensionally stable and extremely hard wearing.

The following guidelines are for ESD Control applications. For non-ESD Control applications, follow the Floor Care Guidelines for Forbo
Eternal Sheet Vinyl.

There are generally three types of cleanings are performed on Colorex SD/EC tiles. The first is an initial cleaning. You would want to wait a minimum of five days following the installation before conducting initial cleaning or other wet cleaning procedures in order to allow the adhesive to dry and cure properly. The initial cleaning is done for new installations exposed to normal construction soil and traffic.

The second type of cleaning is a routine cleaning. The routine cleaning should be performed a minimum of once a day, depending on the application, type of traffic and hours of operation.

The third, and final, type of cleaning is an interim cleaning. The interim cleaning should be performed as needed, depending on the application, type of traffic and hours of operation.

Additional maintenance may be performed if necessary.

Product Construction

Product Construction

We make tiles in order to ensure consistent and unique properties and to overcome problems that can be fatal like emission, shrinkage and diminishing of conductive properties. Tiles can be installed more quickly and easily than sheets and with less waste, especially in small and medium areas or rooms with irregular shapes.

Colorex provides all the features normally associated with ESD sheet product but with the additional benefits mentioned above that the tile format offers. ESD sheet products require a high plastisicer content which can result in out-gassing. In contrast, Colorex tiles have a small percentage of placticer content and as a result, very low outgassing.

In order to get a perfect floor it is important to prepare and to pay attention to a proper installation of the floor covering. Forbo offers an assortment of high quality installation products and tools, which helps you obtaining the desired result. Key factors for successful installation of a floor are:

Jobsite Conditions
Areas to receive material should be clean, fully enclosed and weather tight with the permanent HVAC in operation. A minimum temperature 68º F (20º C) should be established at least seven days prior to beginning the installation, maintained during the installation, and for at least seven days following the installation. The installation should not begin until the work of all other trades has been completed, especially overhead trades. Any areas to receive material should be adequately lighted to allow for proper inspection of the substrate, installation, seaming and for final inspection.

Subfloor Preparation
The installation of a floor starts with the subfloor, which must be sound, smooth, flat, clean, and permanently dry. In order to ensure that the moisture condition of concrete substrates is within acceptable limits, it is critical that moisture testing be conducted on ALL concrete substrates, regardless of age or grade level, including those where resilient flooring has already been installed. Moisture testing should not be conducted unless a stable, conditioned environment as described under the Jobsite Conditions section has been established. The 3 moisture testes that Forbo recommends conducting are as follows: a Calcium Chloride (Moisture Vapor Emission) Test, a Relative Humidity Test, and a pH Test. Performing adhesive bond tests is also highly recommended. Bond testing will aid in identifying both the working characteristics of the adhesive (open time and working time) for the site conditions, and also any potential bonding problems.

Material Storage and Handling
Areas where materials are to be stored should be a stable, conditioned environment as described under the Jobsite Conditions section. All materials and adhesives should be acclimated to these conditions for at least 48 hours prior to the installation. Material should be delivered to the job site in original, unopened packaging, with all labels intact. Store Colorex SD/EC tiles in cartons stacked and lying flat.

At the perimeter of the room (or at grounded steel columns) near the ground point, lay a 3’ - 4' length of grounding strap into the wet adhesive, with approximately 12" extending up the wall. Spread additional adhesive on top of the strap and lay the tile over it. A minimum of one grounding strap should be installed for every 2,000 square feet of uninterrupted tile.

A perfectly installed floor requires perfect adhesion. Forbo recommends using our C 930 adhesive for Colorex SD/EC tile conductive installations. For non-conductive installations we recommend using our V 885 adhesive. A short open time will often be necessary to allow the adhesive to develop body. The tile must be placed into the adhesive before it has had an opportunity to dry. This enables a complete wet transfer of the proper amount of adhesive to the tile backing and is essential for a secure bond. After the tiles are placed into wet adhesive they must be rolled immediately with a 100 pound roller in both directions to ensure adequate transfer of adhesive to the backing. Re-roll the tile periodically to ensure that the tile remains in contact with the adhesive while the adhesive is drying.
