Sustainable design includes the informed selection of materials and products to reduce product‐cycle environmental impacts, improve performance, and optimize occupant health and comfort.
Material transparency allows building professionals to research hidden product impacts like embodied carbon, toxic ingredients or byproducts, and social responsibility in the supply chain.

Safe, Hygienic Healthcare Environments that Support Wellbeing

In this course we discuss how facilities, along with design, need to work hand in hand to prevent the spread of infections through effective hygiene, cleaning/disinfection and adaptable design. These elements are also central to a safe, positive patient experience. Performance has always been a discussion point as part of material and surface selection; however as a result of COVID-19, the importance of cleaning and disinfection of surfaces in all settings has become a priority within interior environments.

This course will show design professionals how to access the available tools to help gain transparency into the make-up and toxicity of certain building products. We will specify healthier, more sustainable building products for educational facilities that are cost effective over the life cycle of the building.

1. Identify current issues impacting the indoor environmental health of educational facilities.

Flooring & CSA Z8000 Canadian Health Care Facilities

This course will cover an overview of the CSA Z8000 guidance objectives related to the OASIS principle. Also some of the requirements of CSA-Z317.13 regarding the selection of materials and infection prevention measures during construction, renovation and/or additions to Healthcare Facilities.

Learning Objectives
Upon completing this continuing education course you will be able to:

1. Define the OASIS principles for Healthcare Facilities.
2. Learn about the natural anti-microbial efficacy of linoleum.
3. See the durability, clean ability, resistance to moisture and chemical damage control of linoleum in healthcare.
