    Marmoleum is circular ready: reducing your carbon footprint and increasing the use of post consumer recycled content, it can be used over and over again.

    A natural revolution

    Marmoleum helps reduce carbon emissions while maximizing the use of post-consumer recycled content. At the end of its life, it can be recycled and transformed into new flooring. Marmoleum Cocoa contains 43% total recycled content, combining material recovered from installation waste and uplifted floors with internally recycled production waste. Additional recycled inputs, such as wood flour and cocoa husks from other industries, further contribute to its circular composition. In this range, we aim to maximize the percentage of end-of-life recycled Marmoleum floors specifically.

    From the recycled content, 33% is recycled pre- and/or post-consumer flooring waste. The balance between the pre- and post-consumer waste varies, due to availability of installation waste and old floors through our Back-to-the-Floor program.

    The right mix between pre- and post-consumer material is needed to guarantee flooring product quality. To guarantee high quality flooring our recycled content is fully tested against health and safety norms, before we reuse it in our new floors.

    In 2021, a project was initiated with the Technical University of Delft in The Netherlands to take back 13,000 m2 of old Marmoleum which had been installed in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) for over 20 years. The challenge was to fully recycle these floors into brand new Marmoleum, a task which was quite uncommon.

    Recycling in steps

    Renovation is usually a matter of demolition and reconstruction, but the project for TU Delft required a more delicate approach. Both the subfloor and the floor covering needed to remain as intact as possible and contamination of the material had to be avoided. With a floor stripper, the Marmoleum was removed quickly and meticulously.

    From flakes to powder

    Once removed from the building, the floor was cleaned to be free from glue and screed material and was then scrapped and grinded. About one third could be reused in new linoleum, the rest was used for other industries.

    From university to Heineken

    The Heineken Experience, the brewery museum, approached us for a circular solution for their new floors. In the end the floor from the University in Delft ended up in a new floor for the famous brewery in Amsterdam.

    Supporting local communities

    The uniqueness of Marmoleum Cocoa extends far beyond the floor itself. Through our recent partnership with Kumasi, we source cocoa husks in a way that directly benefits cocoa farming communities.

    In traditional chocolate production, only the cocoa beans are used, while up to 75% of the fruit is typically discarded. What was once considered waste is now transformed into a valuable resource, providing farmers with additional income from materials that would otherwise go unused.

    At the heart of this story is our collaboration with Dutch-founded social enterprise Kumasi Commodity Innovations, transforming an innovative flooring concept into a powerful example of how beauty, sustainability, and purpose come together.

    Kumasi’s impact goes even further: they also utilize the juice from the cocoa fruit, another overlooked part of the harvest, to create beverages, unlocking even more value for farmers while reducing waste throughout the supply chain. By sourcing cacao fruit juice directly from farmers in countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador, Kumasi enables farmers to earn additional income from the delicious fruit that was previously discarded.

    Women empowerment program

    An important element of this collaboration is its commitment to women empowerment. Through programs connected to the cocoa husk value chain, Kumasi creates opportunities for women in cocoa-producing regions to build financial independence and strengthen their communities. This commitment is embedded in the partnership: supplying us cocoa husks goes hand in hand with supporting these social initiatives.
