Marmoleum: eco-friendly floor

With Marmoleum, you choose a sustainable floor that is climate positive (cradle to gate). From the origins to the final product, without buying carbon credits.

The construction industry is one of the major contributors of carbon emissions that cause climate change. Therefore, we are looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint to combat global warming. The use of environmentally friendly building materials is becoming increasingly important when designing a new construction project.

Forbo aims to contribute to solving climate change issues by developing environmentally friendly flooring solutions.
Our Marmoleum floors are made from 98% natural raw materials such as linseed oil, wood flour, limestone, resin and jute. Marmoleum is unique as it has CO₂ uptake in the product itself. The photosynthesis of the biobased materials used in Marmoleum provides CO₂ uptake that exceeds the CO₂ emissions caused by transportation and production processing. Therefore, Marmoleum is climate positive (or carbon negative) from cradle to gate.

The craft of manufacturing linoleum has evolved over the last 150 years. Forbo has been driving this development through its Marmoleum brand. Making Marmoleum is still an art, which is not taught at any trade or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum.

Determining the right mixture of ingredients, maintaining the right time for the raw materials to settle and applying the correct temperature and pressure are skills that our experts must master. We are proud of our experts as much as they take pride in creating every piece of Marmoleum.
