Camouflage - Choice of colour and pattern

The design and the colour choice influences the appearance over time. In a environment with heavy footfall and little time for cleaning it is recommended to use a more marbled design in softer tones for instance.

The samples on the right give some guidance which design will camouflage the most. Needless to say, good cleaning and maintenance is important for the durability of your floor.

Marmoleum myths busted

There are quite some Marmoleum floors that have been in use for more than 25 years. These floorings are often the foundation for pre-assumptions around the characteristics of Marmoleum.

These older floors are still performing well due to its durable character but are from a different generation and not comparable to Marmoleum that is supplied today.

Through time Marmoleum has been undergoing product innovations that are severely improving its properties to one of the best performing and sustainable resilient floors around. Innovations in adhesives, surface treatment and linoleum technology means that Marmoleum today is amongst the best scratch, stain and water resistant flooring products in the market.

For all Marmoleum installed today we can say with proud: myths busted!

Marmoleum is Natural - THE sustainable flooring choice

Made by nature

Marmoleum, Forbo's brand for linoleum, is a floor made from natural raw materials. The key raw materials used in the linoleum production include linseed oil, which comes from the flax plant seeds, wood flour as production waste from controlled forestry plantations and jute, a crop whose fibers provide the material for the membrane onto which the linoleum is calendared.

These raw materials are obtained from their natural habitat right where they grow and renew, often in just 12 months time. Jute and flax are annual crops that can be harvested just like wheat or corn. Extracting rosin is a continuous process, while wood flour, a waste material from the timber industry, is derived from European production forests. Limestone is available in abundance

A benefit for the environment

You are actually choosing a floor that is CO2 neutral, by nature. The raw materials used for creating linoleum have absorbed such an amount of CO2 during the time the plants, trees and crops have grown, that this amount of CO2 exceeds the amount of CO2 that is emitted while making the product. Each square meter of Marmoleum delivers a bonus to the environment and reduces CO2 emissions.

Producing Marmoleum

The craft of manufacturing linoleum has evolved over the last 150 years. Forbo has been driving this development through its Marmoleum brand. Making Marmoleum flooring is an art, which you cannot learn at any trade - or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum.

Determining the correct mixture of ingredients, allowing the right time for raw materials to settle, applying the correct temperature & pressure are skills a Marmoleum Experts must master. We are proud of our experts, as they take pride in creating our Marmoleum floors.

Circular by nature

The restoring capacity of natural resources is the basis for the circular economy. In essence linoleum is a bio-cycle product, this means that the natural raw materials basically could be composted and returned to earth as nutrients to the new grown rapid natural raw materials. This is the only way to capture CO₂ in a product avoiding off-setting necessity. The use of recycled, up-cycled (i.e. cocoa shells and tall oil) and re-used materials is a circular economy principle that has applied in Marmoleum for ages already.

Contributing to healthy interiors

Floor coverings are an intrinsic part of the built environment, they are omnipresent in every square meter of our schools, health care institutions, workplaces, leisure centers and our home. Forbo’s Marmoleum floors are designed to have a contribution to a safe, hygienic and comfortable environment, contributing to your health.

Today more than half of the world’s population, over 54%, is living in urbanized areas. On average we are spending around 80%-90% of our time indoors and this will only increase. No wonder that the focus on quality of the indoor environment, and the attention given to green architecture and healthy buildings, is becoming more prominent. As our floors are part of the indoor environment in which people live, meet and work, it is our mission to design and offer products that contribute in a positive way to the health and comfort of the individual.

Dalby Skole - playing with colours

The project of the architecture office Nova5 Arkitekter for an expansion of Dalby Skole in Kolding is distinguished by its playing through an exceptionally colourful score. With its expressionist use of colours on the 3,000 m² floor surface, the environment evokes an atmosphere of light and joy, of security and reflection.

An “educational staircase” displays a scale of eight tonal shades of green Marmoleum. It touches on the themes of growth and health, and also on the nuances of a step-by-step learning process. For the younger children, the staircase is based on blue tones, the symbol of peace and harmony.

Forbo Marmoleum was chosen for its wide choice of tonal graduations, in particular the yellow-blue and yellow-green colour scales.

Quote Adrien Garcin of Tautem Architecture:
"No less than 2,980 m² of Forbo’s Marmoleum was used for the Antoine de Ruffi school group. Indeed, we chose to use this material throughout the building, with the exception of the exterior and the wet rooms (clean rooms, changing rooms, kitchen, etc.). Its inherent advantages make it a particularly suitable material for child-friendly facilities (flexible floor, easy maintenance, etc.).
In addition this material enabled us to achieve the ambitious environmental objectives of this operation: the Mediterranean Sustainable Building label, silver level, and a pilot building for the new E+C- regulation, having reached E3C1 level."

HVEG Fashion Group - THE sustainable flooring choice

The HVEG Fashion Group is a group of globally operating fashion and fashion related companies specialised in the development, design, purchase and sale of Private Label articles for clothing and accessories.

Lotte Helmig of Your Tailormate is responsible for the beautiful refurbishment of the offices as well as the company restaurant and the individual showrooms. The client wanted an industrial, sleek look. "I could have achieved that with a cast floor, but I prefer to work with Marmoleum because of the beautiful matt look and the versatility of colours," says Lotte. The fact that Marmoleum is 100% biodegradable was also an important argument for the choice of floor. After all, sustainability is high on the HVEG Fashion Group's corporate strategy.

In the Fashion Ling clothing showroom a light grey floor has been chosen for the ladies department (colour titanium from the Marmoleum Walton collection) and in the men's department there are dark clothing racks and a dark grey floor (colour lead from the Marmoleum Walton collection).

Marmoleum Rosemary Green in the entrance area creates a wow effect. The green is a nice soft counterpart of the glass and the anthracite elements in the stairs and window frames. The desired "green" atmosphere is sought in both colour and durable material.

The customer is very satisfied with the final result. The floor scores not only on durability but also on ease of maintenance and versatility.
