Caledonian Sleeper
The Caledonian Sleeper train journey has been named as one of the best train journeys in Britain, connecting London with numerous destinations in Scotland. The Caledonian Sleeper Highlander route runs between London Euston and Fort William, Inverness, and Aberdeen, the Caledonian Sleeper Lowlander route runs between London Euston and Glasgow Central or Edinburgh Waverley.
The introduction of new trains in 2019 was part of a wide range of improvements and investments in Caledonian Sleeper when Serco took over the franchise on behalf of the Scottish Government in April 2015. Since June 2023, the service has reverted to direct government running under Scottish Rail Holdings.
The renovation and refurbishment project included new facilities such as en-suite rooms, double bed options, comfortable seating, extra power sockets and completely refurbished interiors, including the floor coverings and WIFI throughout. The new fleet was designed to accommodate the modern-day traveller and cater to both business and leisure travel guests.
Forbo Flooring Systems worked with the team at CAF, to supply Coral Brush FR textile entrance matting for the vestibules.
Coral FR entrance flooring stops dirt and moisture from being tracked into train carriages on the soles of shoes and wheeled treads. An effective entrance system reduces premature wear and tear to interior floor finishes and coverings, minimises cleaning and maintenance costs and protects passengers by reducing slip hazards.
The advantage of having Coral FR in the entrance vestibules means that up to 95% of walked-in dirt and moisture can be removed at the point of entry, thus protecting dirt and moisture being tracked into the saloon areas, ensuring that they stay looking good for longer.
The new trains were constructed by CAF in Spain. The first sleeper trains were introduced to the UK for over 35 years. The first carriages were put into service from May 2019 onwards.
