Flooring Solutions with Function, Aesthetics, and Circularity

In Struer Fri Fagskole’s new communal building, the floors have been carefully selected and designed to support the sculptural architectural language and the school’s unique pedagogical approach. Five circular subject rooms and a central workshop form the framework for a subject and leisure area where form, color, and function go hand in hand.

For the flooring, Marmoleum from Forbo was chosen, made from 98% natural and renewable materials. Several colors and collections have been used, including Caribbean, Horse Roan, Fresco Blue, Cork Tree, Honey Suckle, and Donkey Island. The colors were selected to create a sense of visual calm that also engages in dialogue with the complex architecture. Circular cutouts in the linoleum add playfulness and structure with shapes that mirror skylights, lighting, and the round subject rooms.

The floors align with the building's sustainable ambitions and have been carefully chosen to complement the upcycled facades and the school’s distinctive pedagogical principle: making vocational learning part of leisure time. A cohesive choice for a well-rounded project.

To protect the floors and support the indoor climate, Coral entrance mat solutions have also been installed. The colors Coral Brush 5716 Masala Brown and Coral Bright 2608 Fresh Grass were selected—not only to capture dirt and moisture but also to aesthetically harmonize with the building’s overall color palette. They are laid in recessed zones and building entrances, where they, together with colored linoleum steps in blue and red, create clear zoning and an inviting entry.

Architect Rune Dybkjær from MNT Arkitekter emphasizes:
"Marmoleum and Coral are materials we trust. They support both the aesthetics of the architecture and the project’s circular philosophy – right down to the smallest detail."
