The Humanist Daycare Center Alfred-Randt-Straße, also known as the "Rappelkiste" daycare, is located in Berlin-Köpenick. It is one of 27 daycare centers operated by the Humanist Association of Berlin-Brandenburg and offers space for up to 170 children from eight weeks of age until school entry. In 2023, a new single-story building complex was opened, featuring four interior courtyards with the themes of sand, water, meadow, and forest. In addition, the facility includes a spacious studio as well as workshop and research areas that offer children a wide range of educational opportunities.

The building, designed by Hinz Architekten, is characterized by modern, flexible, and accessible architecture. The interior spaces can be flexibly arranged and connected or separated as needed. Large windows and a transparent spatial layout strengthen the connection between the indoor and outdoor areas and provide children with a direct link to nature.

The architecture of the daycare center combines functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability, offering children an inspiring environment to support their development.

The architectural firm chose Forbo’s Marmoleum flooring for the project. This material is especially well suited for daycare centers:

Sustainable & environmentally friendly
Marmoleum is made from up to 98% bio-based and natural raw materials such as linseed oil, wood flour, and jute. This makes it an ideal fit for the daycare’s sustainable concept.

Durable & long-lasting
In a daycare center with 170 children, the floor is subject to heavy wear and tear. Marmoleum is extremely robust, resistant to scratches and pressure marks, and stands up to even intensive use for many years.

Hygienic & easy to clean
Thanks to its factory-applied Topshield Pro surface finish, Marmoleum is particularly easy to clean and ensures a hygienic environment in the daycare center.

Aesthetics & a welcoming atmosphere
The flooring is available in many designs, which made it possible to implement the architects’ planned themes of sand, water, meadow, and forest.
