Designed for the future of healthcare

A hospital designed to welcome

At Mälarsjukhuset in Eskilstuna, Sweden, new care spaces feel bright, fresh and welcoming. Across the hospital, 33,000 m² of Forbo flooring supports this vision while meeting the demands of daily healthcare.

Part of Region Sörmland’s Hospital of the Future project, the new facilities were designed by Carlstedts Arkitekter. The scale of the building called for flooring that could meet the needs of many different spaces while giving the interiors a coherent look and feel.

Our world - Reference stories

A different feel from the moment you arrive

Moving from the older part of the hospital into the new building, the change in atmosphere is immediately noticeable. Light, colour and carefully chosen materials give the spaces a more welcoming character.

The floor is an important part of that experience. With so much of it visible throughout the building, the architects needed a palette that could define different zones and suit the character of each space. Sphera homogeneous vinyl offered the range of colours needed to create those distinctions while giving the interiors a consistent look.

Made for life in a hospital

A hospital operates around the clock. Patients, visitors, staff and equipment move through its spaces every day, placing constant demands on the floor. Durability, hygiene and ease of cleaning were therefore central to the flooring choice.

Sphera was installed across most of the new facilities, including corridors and care areas. Its surface is designed to withstand heavy use and make everyday maintenance easier. The colour choices also help distinguish different areas, bringing a sense of order to a building of this size.

The right floor for each space

Some rooms have more specific requirements. Colorex tiles were selected for server rooms and technical areas where electrostatic discharge needs to be controlled. In toilets and bathrooms, Surestep safety flooring provides added slip resistance.

Together, these solutions address the practical needs of different spaces while keeping the wider design vision intact.

Delivering at scale

For flooring contractor Metodgolv, this was one of the largest projects the team had worked on. The installation involved many zones, detailed planning and extensive coved skirting to meet hygiene requirements.

Metodgolv found the Forbo flooring straightforward to work with and valued the coordination of materials and deliveries throughout the project. On a hospital build of this scale, getting the right flooring to the right place was as important as the installation itself.
