At Forbo Eurocol, working on sustainability is an integral part of our policy. It starts with product development and the selection of raw materials, and continues throughout the entire life cycle of a product from production, transport and logistics, to application, waste streams and recycling. The inclusion of 29 Eurocol products in the National Environmental Database is a recognition of our sustainability efforts, and you, as a user of our products, benefit from this.
The National Environmental Database was established to enable a consistent calculation of the environmental performance of buildings in the Netherlands. The Dutch government aims to reduce the environmental impact of buildings by promoting the use of sustainable materials. Every construction product used has an impact on the environment. All these effects combined determine the environmental performance of a building. The National Environmental Database Foundation operates according to the Environmental Performance Assessment Method for Buildings, which is uniform, independent, complete, and reliable. Environmental data for construction materials are collected in the National Environmental Database in accordance with this methodology.Based on this registered product data, the environmental performance of a building can be determined. The calculation method is based on the life cycle assessment (LCA) of a construction product. An independent analyst examines a product at each stage of its life cycle. A recognized expert from the National Environmental Database Foundation then assesses this data using a scoring system, after which the product may or may not be included in the National Environmental Database.
So far, the theory. But what does a Eurocol product listed in the National Environmental Database mean for you as an applicator?
Increasingly, decisions about which products to use are already made at the drawing board, aiming to minimise the environmental impact of a building. This is part of the broader policy to move towards circular construction as much as possible. Based on product data from the National Environmental Database, clients can compare different products and materials and make selections based on their sustainability scores. In other words, primers, levelling compounds, grouts, tile and floor-covering adhesives, or surface finishing products included in the National Environmental Database have a greater chance of being selected for a project. In fact, due to stricter requirements for environmental performance calculations as of January 1, 2025, products that do not meet NMD requirements may no longer be used in construction projects. The NMD recognition of Eurocol products is therefore not only beneficial for the environment and sustainability—it also offers clear commercial advantages for you as a tiling contractor, project outfitter, or interior specialist.
