What toothing should be used for bonding floor tiles?

The toothing is selected during the work based on the tiles and the type of substrate.

The toothing to be used depends on the smoothness of the substrate and the flatness of the tiles, among other things. And you can only know it when you see it with your own eyes. With large-format tiles, such as 60x60 and 80x80, it’s always important that the surface is smooth. If it isn’t, it’s advisable to level it first.

But even if your floor has been levelled, we can’t give advice on toothing. As a tiler, you really have to determine that yourself. How do you do that? By removing a tile from the adhesive bed, you can see what the adhesive contact surface looks like and whether it’s suitable.

The questions to ask are as follows. Is the back of the tile full and covered in adhesive? Has the ‘buttering-floating’ method been used? If the adhesive contact surface isn’t suitable, you’ll need to adjust the trowel. A larger toothing ensures a larger and thicker adhesive bead.

The amount of adhesive you ultimately need to use per square metre depends on the toothing you choose. You decide that yourself during the work.
