Ruhr University Bochum

Located in the heart of Europe, The Ruhr University is home to 5.000 employees and over 36.500 students from 130 countries. The Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is thus one of the ten largest universities in Germany. All major scientific disciplines are united on a compact campus.
Founded in 1962, the campus and further facilities of the university are to be fundamentally redesigned and rehabilitated in the coming decades. The main canteen was redesigned and renovated between 2003 and 2006.
The renovation of the office building was completed in August 2010.
The campus is located on the edge of a hill above Lake Kemnade. 13 main building are grouped around the cafeteria, the audimax, the university library and the university forum in four symmetrical complexes. Despite existing renovations, the complex of the university had seams that were threatening to burst.
Therefor it was it necessary to build new buildings for the future.
In the newly constructed building, a total of 26.800 sqm of new PVC and needle felt lining were laid in the past months (20.000 sqm of PVC flooring, 2.000 sqm of electrically conductive PVC flooring, 4.800 sqm of needle felt). The company Stickel Gmbh from Castrop-Rauxel (owner Volker Rütten) was awarded the contract for the execution for this laying work in the Ruhr-University Bochum.
Subfloor consisting of a floating cement screed with a layer thickness between 7 and 11 cm was found. Due to the long frost period at the beginning of this year, special urgency was needed to complete the project. In addition, it was aggravating that, due to different layer thickness, the screed was not sufficiently dry. Due to these structural conditions it was decided to block the screed against ascending moisture. It was known that the client finds a great importance and great value to an environmentally friendly construction. Therefore, an isocyanate-based two-component epoxy system was the clear choice. The choice was therefore the product 026 Euroblock Multi, a dispersion-based one-component barrier for capillary-breaking block of excessive residual moisture. It is noteworthy that this barrier is in compliance with the EC 1 standard according to EMICODE as well as certified by this standard. Subsequent sanding is not required with 026. The blocking time is time-saving itself as it is done within one working day. The time during which subsequent work can be carried out is up 7 working days.
Areas that did not be blocked with 026 were applied with universal 044 Europrimer Multi. This is a primer that can be diluted with water, which, in addition to the EC 1 standard in acc. To EMICODE is also certified according to Blue Angel of the office building was completed in August 2010.

The super liquid levelling compound 977 Europlan Pro was used as the levelling compound, which is generally applicable in layer thicknesses up to 10 mm. In addition to very good flow properties, it is characterized by a very good surface finish and very good tensile strength properties. 977 is certified EMICODE EC 1 Plus R.
The following Forbo Eurocol adhesive were used for laying the PVC floor covering:
643 Eurostar Fibre, a fiber-reinforced universal adhesive of extremely strong bonding. Emission tested product to DIBt principles. GISCODE D 1, EMICODE EC 1, Blue Angel ZU 13.
641 Eurostar Special EC is a light, conductive, with high bonding strenght dispersion adhesive for electrically conductive laying of suitable floor coverings. Emission tested product according to DIBt principles. EMICODE EC 1 Plus.

The following Forbo Eurocol adhesive was used for areas where needle felt were laid:
509 Eurostar Tex is a wet-set textile adhesive with high initial bonding strength and enhanced open time. Emission tested product according to DIBt principles. EMICODE EC 1.

The installation company was very satisfied with the decision to exclusively use Forbo Eurocol premium products for a project which needed to be carried out in a short time and not always under the best subfloor and installation conditions.
