We go round

In order to move forward

At Forbo Flooring Systems, it's action that is important, not just promises. We want to be a trusted partner who provides full transparency when it comes to circular flooring solutions and renewable raw materials.

It is about the things we do, not just about the things we promise.

The pillars of our ambition

Renewability

Renewable materials are an important part of a fully circular future. That’s why we continue to increase the bio-based content in our portfolio. We are the world leader in linoleum, and our Marmoleum is made from up to 98% natural and renewable materials.

Transparency

Life cycle assessments remain the foundation of our environmental strategy across the transport sector. We offer third‑party verified EPDs for several transport products and actively support the continued development and adoption of EPDs, ensuring human and eco‑health considerations are reflected in our disclosures.

Circularity

We work on creating products that keep the end in mind - and do this throughout our design process and choice of materials. Our Back to the Floor programme is active in many markets, contributing to reuse and recycling.

Challenges in the flooring industry

Where we need to move forward

Sustainable materials play a crucial role in the transport sector, and making the right choices can significantly reduce the overall environmental impact of rail, marine, bus, and coach interiors. Learn more about the five key themes we are focusing on to meet sustainability challenges across passenger transport environments.

Sustainability | Forbo Flooring Systems

1. Product development & design

We develop and design flooring solutions to create value during use and after, keeping both the environment and users in mind. Our focus is on designing flooring with renewable and recycled materials. This enables us to deliver products that help take care of both the environment and you.

We aim to create easy-removal solutions that are eco- and human-safe in all product categories while contributing to recycling schemes worldwide. That means you get products that are easy to install and remove – enabling a smooth recycling process.

2. Sourcing & raw materials

To make sure our products are completely sustainable, we set the highest standards for sourcing and materials. Our commitment to sustainable material sourcing is reflected in the extensive third‑party testing and certifications that support our transport product portfolio. Where available, we also provide EPDs to enhance transparency across our range.

We aim to only use 100% harmless and traceable raw materials and increase the amount of bio-based products sold. That means you get products that are completely toxic- and phthalate-free and sourced from natural raw materials to work with, not against, the environment.

3. Climate positive and zero-waste production

We don’t just aim to only use sustainable materials for our products. We also aim to make our products as sustainable as possible. That’s why we are working towards a zero-waste production cycle and products made using as much recycled material as possible.

We make flooring solutions that are as sustainable as possible from design to end-of-life and are produced, where possible, with 100% renewable energy sources and rapidly renewable raw materials. This is how we produce products like Marmoleum that are truly climate positive (cradle to gate) without the need for off-setting.

4. Long lasting & easy to maintain

Sustainability and longevity go hand in hand – the less energy we spend creating, installing, removing, repairing and recycling products, the less energy we use overall. That is why our flooring solutions are made to withstand stressful environments in addition to being easy to clean, thereby significantly reducing your cleaning costs.
We also offer short-term solutions that can be used over and over again.

5. Recycling & end of life

To become truly sustainable, we need to close the loop. We do that by continuously improving our modular offerings and finding ways to recycle them at their end of life and working with local recycling schemes. We also design flooring that is made of recycled materials, so your old flooring can be repurposed today – and tomorrow.

We aim to ensure flooring materials are fully recyclable and help drive the implementation of economically viable take-back schemes. That means you get products with 44% recycled content on average per product, from sources such as fishnets and post-consumer waste.
