The Water–Forest Centre Schortens is a modern hub for environmental education dedicated to the themes of water, forests and sustainability. Located in the historic monastery park, the centre makes ecological interrelationships tangible and accessible for visitors. Interactive exhibition areas, educational programmes for school classes, and flexible seminar and event formats address a wide audience and promote awareness of the responsible use of natural resources.
The building was designed by the architectural firm Ralph Thater. Its architecture is deliberately understated and blends harmoniously into the surrounding natural landscape. The structure is built on stilts to protect the ground and the natural water balance. Large glass façades provide transparency and abundant daylight, while wood as a key material emphasises the building’s close connection to nature. The sustainable concept is further enhanced by energy-efficient technologies, including a photovoltaic system on the roof.
Great importance was also placed on sustainability, functionality and a strong link to the exhibition themes in the interior design. Various Forbo flooring solutions were used throughout the building. In the entrance areas, Coral Bright ensures effective dirt and moisture absorption. Marmoleum Concrete in several colour shades was installed in the exhibition and common areas, valued for its natural appearance, durability and ease of maintenance. A particular highlight is the digitally printed Eternal flooring, featuring water and forest motifs that bring the centre’s core themes to life.
The professional installation of the floor coverings was carried out by Raumausstattung Kusch GmbH & Co. KG. Overall, the Water–Forest Centre Schortens is a successful example of how sustainable architecture and high-quality, durable materials can be combined to create a coherent and compelling overall concept.
