Flotex flocked flooring

Flotex Tibor sheet

The textile designer Tibor Reich, the creator of Tibor, was one of the most well-known figures in the British post-war textile industry. Forbo has teamed up with Tibor Reich to create an exciting new range for Flotex. Most of the designs are derived from Tibor’s 1957 Fotexur collection. The Fotexur designs are printed on Forbo’s Flotex in bold bright colours and have a classic timeless feel, despite dating back to the 50s.

    Flotex Onyx

This pattern may look like marble but it is actually inspired by photography of cracked mud in the riverbed next to Tibor’s Clifford Mill. This is one of his most famous Fotexur designs and was actually used for a woven carpet named Padua, so it is fitting that it is being used for decorative flooring again.

    Flotex Atomic

This design is inspired from a photographic of an atomic structure and symbolizes the Atomic Age. It is part of the Colatomic range that was launched in 1960 and reflects Tibor’s interest in colour and texture. It also showcases the impact of Abstract Expressionism, which was quite popular in the art world at the time.

    Flotex Arbor

Like all of the Tibor Fotexur patterns, the Arbor design was inspired by a crisp black and white photograph, taken by Tibor himself. The image is the rugged texture of the striated bark of an oak tree and provides the perfect foil for varied coloured overlays.

    Flotex Tessello

This Tibor pattern has two distinct layers, a fine mesh in the background, and then overlaid with a fragmented larger scale-grid. These subtle textures are structures yet informal and create a very effective low-key flooring design.

  • Flotex Mosaic 980405 monochrome
    Flotex Mosaic

    Flotex Mosaic

This pattern is derived from a photograph of Tibor’s of a sheer fabric made from slub yarn to create a tactile effect. This creates a pleasing contrast of the grid uniformity and the unpredictability of the loops. Co-ordinating stripes are available in 2 colourways.

    Flotex Ziggurat

This Fotexur pattern, inspired by Tibor’s photograph of straw, focuses on texture and line. The image has great definition since it was taken in the spring sunshine and the design intentionally highlights the tonal contrasts between light and dark.

    Flotex Quartz

Tibor extensively photographed the natural world as it was a great source of inspiration. The Quartz pattern showcases the natural granular composition of pebbles and rocks.

    Flotex Tweedy

Tibor created both printed and woven fabrics which was unusual for a textile designer. The Tweedy pattern was inspired by one of his photographs of his Deep Texture weaves, in which tactile fabrics are created with irregular slubby yarns.

Tibor & The Art of Fotexur

Tibor & The Art of Fotexur

Hungarian émigré Tibor Reich (1916-1996) was one of the most prominent figures in the British post-war textile industry. A multi faceted artist, who designed carpets, wallpapers, ceramics, tiles and vinyl flooring, all in his distinctive co-ordinated style.

A gifted artist and dynamic entrepreneur, he moved to the UK in 1937 to study at Leeds University. Tibor Ltd, the company he established in 1946 he at Clifford Mill near Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, was a leading brand throughout the 1950s and 60s.

Texture was the defining feature of Tibor’s textiles. As well as his celebrated Deep Texture weaves, he produced arresting screen-printed curtain fabrics, known as Texture Prints.

Most of the designs selected by Forbo are from Tibor’s ground-breaking Fotexur collection, launched in 1957, winner of the Council of Industrial Design’s inaugural Design Centre Award. The ‘Fo’ refers to photography, while ‘Texur’ evokes texture, both key aspects of these designs.

Close-up photographs of organic materials, such as straw and bark, provided the starting point for Tibor’s intriguing Fotexur patterns. A keen photographer, he drew inspiration from the natural world.

His eye was attracted to relief patterns and tonal contrasts in unusual places, such as fissures in a dried up river bed. Tibor also photographed his own weaves and used these images in his designs.

The Fotexur process began by screen-printing the photograph on paper, before isolating a section of the image and cutting it into squares or strips. Patterns were created by rotating and re-arranging these repeated motifs in different formations to create energetic and rhythmic compositions. Tibor’s bold choice of color variations provided the final ingredient to these stimulating and eye-catching designs.

Printed on Forbo Flotex in vibrant colors, Tibor’s innovative Fotexur designs have a timeless feel, despite dating back 70 years.
