What's important

What's important?

✔ Infection control
✔ Phthalate-free
✔ Prevent the growth of bacteria

✔ Easy floorcare

Infection control

Marmoleum's ability to naturally inhibit the growth of bacteria stems from the natural raw materials that go into its production, specifically linseed oil. An inherent property of the product, the anti-bacterial qualities of Marmoleum won't diminish over time, giving peace of mind and constant protection from the moment it is installed.

Independent testing by the University of Glasgow has proven that Marmoleum has a unique suitability for a diverse range of environments where hygiene and control of bacteria such as MRSA or E. coli is an everyday concern. Visit our website to see a list of common bacteria that won't survive on Marmoleum

Infection control

"Most MRSA infections occur in people who've been in hospitals or other healthcare settings."

Phthalate free

Phthalates are a family of chemical compounds primarily used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or vinyl flexible and pliable. The added phthalates are often called “plasticizers.” As they are additives and not chemically bound like PVC itself, they can release from the material over time.

Exposure to certain kinds of phthalates has been linked to specific negative health impacts. Created from natural, renewable materials, Marmoleum flooring is the most sustainable and healthy resilient flooring available. It contains no phthalates, no plasticizers and no mineral oil.

Naturally inhibits the growth of bacteria

While the larger problems of bacterial infection and indoor environmental health may not lend themselves to quick, easy solutions some steps can create an immediate improvement. A good first move is to replace products that add to the problem with ones that reduce the risk naturally.

Marmoleum is made of natural ingredients that resist microbial growth by their very nature. Thanks to the natural raw materials that go into the production, specifically flax seed oil, Marmoleum has the ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria. An inherent property of the product, the anti-bacterial qualities of Marmoleum won't diminish over time, giving peace of mind and constant protection from the moment it is installed.

Independent tests prove that MRSA, C-Diff and staphylococcus aureus do not multiply on Marmoleum.

Dementia

Designing for dementia

Forbo has partnered with Dementia Services Development Center (DSDC), an international center which draws on 25 years of global research and practice, to identify which products in our portfolio can contribute to improving the quality of life for people with dementia.

Flooring is one of the most essential factors in determining a basis for designing a dementia environment as it has much impact on safety and orientation of a space, giving patients confidence, security and independence.

Dementia

Dementia friendly flooring selection guidelines

• Tonal contrast is critical for materials to be seen against each other.
• Both DSDC and BS8300:2009 recommend a difference of 30 points of LRV between critical surfaces such as floors to walls and doors to walls.
• Adjoining flooring should be tonally similar to reduce the risk of falls.
• Flooring LRVs should be within 8 points of each other (less is better) and no more than 10.
• Transition strips should match the tones of both surfaces with an ideal difference of no more than 3 points of LRV step difference.
• It is recommended that skirtings contrast with both the wall and the door where possible.

Dementia friendly flooring

Do's

• Develop one tonally continuous flooring surface
• Aim to reduce impact sound
• Avoid sensory overload
• Avoid sparkle & pattern
• Opt for matt finishes
• Provide good tonal transition between floors

Don'ts

• Don’t use patterned floors
• Don’t use sparkly floors (perceived as a wet surface / slip risk)
• Don’t use flecked floors (may be perceived as something to pick up)
• Don’t use logos or brands (perceived as an obstacle)
• Don’t use any flooring with a high gloss or shiny finish
(also perceived as being Slippery)
• Don’t use aluminum or brass reflective trims or transitions
(could cause high-stepping)
