Marmoleum is a floorcovering that works with nature. It is biobased and produced from natural raw materials, many of which, are renewable and grow. The homogenous linoleum can be also be produced indefinitely.

The craft of manufacturing linoleum has evolved over the last 150 years, which, you cannot learn at any trade or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum.

Healthy indoor environment

Children spend most of their time indoors, at home and in school. Children spend approximately 35-40 hours per week, for 9 month out of the year in a school building. The measured indoor air quality parameters indicate that children in elementary schools are subjected to large concentrations of CO2 and exposed to increased levels of particulate VOC’s and biological contaminants.

Asthma and allergic diseases are the most prevalent chronic diseases among children and have increased quite rapidly in the last decades. The findings cannot be explained by genetic changes and are more likely to be due to changes in environmental exposure and/or in lifestyle.

In safe indoor environments floors are non-toxic, low emitting and compliant to all international standards. On top of this, a safe floor is designed to prevent accidents. Our Marmoleum floor coverings have been awarded the prestigious “Seal of Approval” from Allergy UK, as, with the correct cleaning regime, they will not harbor allergens or house dust mites.

A recent report by Allergy UK estimates that there are at least 12 million people “allergic to their own home” with 58% citing house dust mites as a key trigger. Therefore the importance of floor coverings in creating better indoor environments should not be overlooked.

It’s also an issue that shouldn’t be ignored by educational, healthcare, office establishments or social care in fact any place where people are likely to spend a prolonged period.

While the larger problems of bacterial infestation and indoor environment health may not lend themselves to quick, easy solutions some steps can create an immediate improvement. A good first move is to replace products that add to the problem with ones that reduce the risk naturally.

Marmoleum is made of natural ingredients that resist microbial growth by their very nature. Thanks to the natural raw materials that go into the production, specifically flax seed oil Marmoleum gets its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria stems. Independent tests prove that MRSA, Staphylococcus aureus, c-Diff and other HAI infections do not multiply on Marmoleum.

Phthalate free

Phthalates are a family of chemical compounds primarily used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or vinyl flexible and pliant. The phthalates widely selected to soften vinyl are used because of their strong performance, durability and stability. Because they are used to soften vinyl and make it flexible, in these applications they are called “plasticizers.”

Exposure to some kind of phthalates has been linked to the rise in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Created from natural, renewable materials, Marmoleum flooring is the most sustainable resilient flooring available. It contains no phthalates, no plasticisers and no mineral oil.

The best way to reduce sound is at the source. Acoustic floors have an important contribution in reducing noise in buildings. Our acoustic linoleum floors create a healthy environment by combining sustainability with excellent sound reduction properties.

For schools, proper acoustic performance creates a quiet atmosphere (even if children are running in the corridors) to help children learn.

How does it work?

The best way to reduce sound is at the source. That’s why acoustic floors are key when it comes to reducing noise in buildings.

Sound is generated by almost all everyday activities. Impact sound is generated by traffic contacting the floor surface. The floor is therefore also the main area where acoustic performance can be influenced.

Impact sound made on the floor in 1 room is transmitted through the floor into rooms below. To measure the impact sound reduction achieved by a floor covering, impact noise is generated with a hammer machine directly onto a concrete floor slab in an emission room and the sound level (S1) is recorded in the reception room below.

The floor covering is then laid onto the concrete slab, and the same impact noise is made on the floor covering, and the new sound level (S2) is recorded. The impact sound reduction (EN ISO 717-2) is the difference, measured in decibels, between the 2 sound levels recorded.

The impact sound reduction of Forbo's acoustic project vinyl and linoleum floors varies from 14 to 19 dB. Decibel has been tested in Australia and complies with LnTw requirements between floors.

Marmoleum Decibel provides an impact sound reduction of 18dB. It is 2.5 mm Marmoleum laminated onto a 1 mm layer of polyolefin foam. Marmoleum Decibel is available in 27 colors from the Marmoleum Marbled and Marmoleum Solid collection.

Corkment Underlay
