Marmoleum Cocoa builds on the proven sustainability of the Marmoleum range, which is made from up to 98% natural raw materials, including linseed oil, wood flour, and jute. What makes this collection unique is the addition of cocoa shells, a by-product of the cocoa industry that would otherwise go to waste. By integrating these shells into the flooring, Forbo Flooring gives new life to an underutilised resource while contributing to a more circular economy.

With 38% recycled content and a production process that is climate positive from cradle to gate without offsetting, Marmoleum Cocoa continues to set the benchmark for truly sustainable flooring solutions.

Giving cocoa waste a second life

Marmoleum Cocoa is made with recycled cocoa shells sourced through our partnership with Kumasi. In traditional cocoa production, only the beans are used, while up to 75% of the fruit is typically discarded. By transforming cocoa husks into a valuable raw material for flooring, we help reduce waste and create additional value from an overlooked resource.

The partnership also contributes to women's empowerment initiatives in cocoa-producing regions. Through programs connected to the cocoa husk value chain, women gain opportunities to strengthen their financial independence and support their local communities.

Creating more value for cocoa farmers

Our collaboration with Dutch social enterprise Kumasi helps cocoa farming communities benefit from more of the cocoa harvest. In addition to collecting cocoa husks, Kumasi also uses cocoa fruit juice to create beverages, providing farmers in countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador with new income opportunities from materials that were previously discarded.

The result:

  • A more circular use of natural resources

Recycling Marmoleum floors

In 2021, Forbo Flooring partnered with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Netherlands to recover and recycle 13,000 m² of Marmoleum flooring that had been in use for more than 20 years in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS).

The goal was ambitious: to take back the used Marmoleum floors and fully recycle them into brand-new Marmoleum flooring. This pioneering circular flooring project demonstrated how Marmoleum can support a circular economy by transforming end-of-life flooring materials into high-quality new floors.

    A minimalist wellness space designed for mind and body.

    Glow Circuit is a unique wellness studio in Perth offering a holistic blend of fitness training, yoga, mindset coaching, and mentoring. The space is purposefully designed to support individual wellbeing through simplicity, calm, and clarity.

    To reflect its mission, the interior design embraces a soft, minimalist aesthetic look that feels both contemporary and comforting. Forbo’s Marmoleum Cocoa flooring was selected for its natural, sustainable composition and subtle visual texture, contributing to the warm, natural atmosphere of the studio.

    The architectural firm Studio Carcasse has designed a modern and flexible office for Thoughtworks that supports traditional ways of working. An elegant color concept was implemented with individual furniture and climate-positive floor coverings from Forbo Flooring.

    Marmoleum Cocoa in Nightingale Marrickville

    Nightingale Housing, in partnership with not-for-profit Fresh Hope Communities, has delivered Nightingale Marrickville a thoughtfully designed rental community in Sydney’s inner west.

    The project, designed by SJB Architects, features 54 space-efficient Teilhaus apartments and generous shared spaces that foster community connection. Each home is offered at 20% below market rent, making high-quality, sustainable housing more accessible to residents.

    Marmoleum Cocoa was chosen for its natural, sustainable composition and subtle, organic texture, complementing the project’s warm, minimalist aesthetic and commitment to environmental responsibility.

    A collaboration that reflects how good design and social purpose can go hand in hand.
