What is BCA Green Mark 2021?
BCA Green Mark 2021 (GM:2021) is an internationally recognised green building certification scheme tailored for the tropical climate, encouraging the industry and professionals to develop green building solutions and raise Singapore's built environment sustainability standards. GM:2021 places greater emphasis on reducing embodied carbon across a building's life cycle, creating healthier environments for building users, and designing for maintainability.
Why flooring matters for Green Mark
Flooring is the largest interior surface
Flooring sits in two sections of the GM:2021 framework:
Credit HW1.2: Material Emissions
Flooring, wall, and ceiling finishes are assessed for VOC emissions, tested to ASTM D5116-90 or carry an SGBC 4-tick label; installation system VOC data (adhesive, weld rod) is also required.
Credit CN3.2: Fit Out Products
The confirmed thresholds for non-residential buildings are:
• 1 point for common areas (non-tenanted spaces): ≥80% by cost or area of fit-out materials conserved or at least SGBP 2-tick certified or equivalent administered by local certification bodies.
• 1 point for tenanted spaces/dwelling units: ≥80% by cost or area of fit-out materials conserved or at least SGBP 2-tick certified or equivalent
Additionally: fit out products with EPD certification can score additional points at the Innovation section
