For more than 20 years, we've been offering rigid matting training at our Telford rigid entrance matting manufacturing site. As Garry Bateman explains, our training facility on the mezzanine floor overlooking the factory is no an official CITB registered training centre.
Our entrance matting installation training is carried out by Steve Donegani and Ron Mayle, both part of Forbo's UK Technical Team, who, back in 2002, were trained by the CITB (to run such industry based courses).
Our training courses have always been based on the Board's guidelies. Until this year, Forbo Flooring has been working with and training a selected group of specialist matting installers and flooring contractors, registering their fitters and carrying out three yearly assessments to verify the continuity of skills learnt. This has kept a steady flow of fitters coming through the Telford factory for training and has supported the sales of Nuway in both the UK and overseas. Most of these fitters have been eligible to apply for a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Card allowing them access to building sites to fit mats.
Last year, the Government decided to alter the CSCS Card scheme to ensure all card holders could demonstrate an externally verifiable and certified skill. This created a problem within the matting sector as there was no external or official training course available and CSCS Cards were about to be withdrawn. Steve Donegani, Ron Mayle and I worked with the CITB to produce a new generic CITB approved standard training course for entrance matting and associated products called ‘Entrance Matting and Matwell Framing Installation’. This is a four-day course suitable for anyone wanting to learn about and be competent in fitting entrance matting. This training standard was one of the first 50 being introduced for all products by the CITB.
Forbo has been working very closely with FITA (Flooring
Industry Training Association), the training arm of the Contract Flooring Association for many years. We are a Premier Sponsor of the organisation, providing free flooring material for many of its training courses and we also support the CFA Flooring Apprentice of the Year competition.
This year we have strengthened our links further still by
providing FITA with the use of a newly refurbished training
facility in Kirkcaldy where its highly qualified instructors can offer a wide range of courses.
