Why is Marmoleum so natural?
Plants are the main source of Marmoleum floors, as they grow they ultimately provide the natural ingredients for linoleum. The flax plant flowers produce linseed from which the vegetable oil is extracted. Rosin, which is responsibly extracted from certified re-planted pine forests, is combined with the linseed oil to form the very essence of linoleum.
Limestone and wood flour - residue from the recycled materials from the PEFC certified forestry industry - provide substance to the linoleum, while the fibres from the jute plant are used for the jute mesh carrier on which linoleum is calendared. Pigments colour the floor and give it its characteristic visual.
How it's made
The craft of manufacturing linoleum has evolved over the last 160 years. Forbo has been driving this development through its Marmoleum brand. Making Marmoleum flooring is an art, which you can not learn at any trade - or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum.
Determining the correct mixture of ingredients, allowing the right time for raw materials to settle, applying the correct temperature & pressure are skills a Marmoleum Experts must master. We are proud of our experts, as they take pride in creating our Marmoleum floors.

"Marmoleum is our worldwide linoleum brand, which is known for its natural origin, durable character, versatility in its application and easiness to clean and install."
One very specific and unique characteristic of linoleum floorings is its natural antibacterial properties Marmoleum's ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria stems from the natural raw materials that go into its production, namely linseed oil. An inherent property of the product, the bacteriostatic qualities of Marmoleum won't diminish over time, giving peace of mind and constant protection from the moment it is installed.
Third-party laboratory research* shows that Marmoleum floors restrain and reduces the activity of common bacteria including Ecoli and MRSA, thus enhancing the hygienic performance of the floor.

Antimicrobial test results:
Topshield2 is Forbo Floorings' high-performance UV-finish which is applied to all Marmoleum floor coverings.
Topshield2 resists staining, scuffing and scratching for lasting appearance retention and provides for easy cleaning and maintenance at lower intervals.
Because the finish of the floor can be refreshed the lifecycle of the floor can be prolonged as over time the floor continues to perform as it can be returned to its initial appearance. With Topshield2 the performance and appearance of the floor keep up even under longer cleaning and maintenance intervals.
Allergy approved flooring
Allergy UK has conducted a survey to ask people how they think about their workplace in relation to the presence of allergens. They concluded that close to 27% of working people could be allergic to their workplace.
Forbo's Marmoleum has been awarded the prestigious Allergy UK Seal of Approval as, with the correct cleaning and maintenance regime, it won't harbour dust mites, contributing to a better indoor environment for all. This is one of the reasons why Forbo's Marmoleum flooring has been awarded the prestigious Allergy UK Seal of Approval™.
