Marmoleum innovations

Older Marmoleum floors (+25 years old) are often the foundation for pre-assumptions around the characteristics of Marmoleum. These floors are still performing well due to their durable character, but are from a different generation and not comparable to Marmoleum that is supplied today.

Through time, Marmoleum has been undergoing product innovations that are severely improving its properties to one of the best performing and sustainable resilient floors. Innovations in adhesives, surface treatment and linoleum technology mean that Marmoleum today is among the best scratch, stain and water-resistant flooring products on the market.

MARMOLEUM IS NATURAL - THE sustainable flooring choice

Marmoleum is a natural resilient floor made from natural raw materials, it is produced climate positive – from cradle to gate.

Made by nature

Marmoleum, Forbo's brand for linoleum, is a floor made from natural raw materials. The key raw materials used in linoleum production include linseed oil, which comes from the flax plant seeds, wood flour as production waste from controlled forestry plantations and jute, a crop whose fibres provide the material for the membrane onto which the linoleum is calendared.

These raw materials are obtained from their natural habitat right where they grow and renew, often in just 12 months' time.

Marmoleum is climate positive

When choosing for Marmoleum, you are actually choosing a floor that is climate positive, by nature. The raw materials used for creating linoleum have absorbed such an amount of CO₂ during the time the plants, trees, and crops have grown, that this amount of CO₂ exceeds the amount of CO₂ that is emitted while making the product. Each square metre of Marmoleum delivers a bonus to the environment and reduces CO₂ emissions, as well as helping to restore Australia's natural biodiversity with our partnership with Carbon Positive Australia.

Marmoleum is a recyclable product

The restoring capacity of natural resources is the basis for the circular economy. In essence, linoleum is a bio-cycle product, this means that the natural raw materials basically could be composted and returned to earth as nutrients to the new grown rapid natural raw materials.

This is the only way to capture CO₂ in a product, avoiding off-setting necessity. The use of recycled, up-cycled (i.e. cocoa shells and tall oil) and re-used materials is a circular economy principle that has been applied in Marmoleum for ages already.

Circular economy

Contributing to healthy interiors

Floor coverings are an intrinsic part of the built environment, they are omnipresent in every square meter of our schools, healthcare institutions, workplaces, leisure centres and our home. Today more than half of the world’s population, over 54%, are living in urbanised areas. On average, we are spending around 80%-90% of our time indoors, and this will only increase. The quality of indoor environments and therefore the attention for green architecture and healthy buildings are becoming more and more important.

Forbo’s Marmoleum floors are designed to contribute to a safe, hygienic and comfortable indoor environment. It is our mission to design and offer floor products that positively affect the health and comfort of the individual.

Marmoleum - Benefits for health

Making Marmoleum is an art

The craft of manufacturing linoleum has evolved over the last 150 years. Forbo has been driving this development through its Marmoleum brand. Our linoleum flooring is made in our manufacturing plants in Europe, Assendelft and Scotland both ISO 9001 and 14001 certified.

Making Marmoleum flooring is an art, which you cannot learn at any trade – or craft school. In fact, only a handful of people know how to make Marmoleum.

Determining the correct mixture of ingredients, allowing the right time for raw materials to settle, and applying the correct temperature & pressure are skills Marmoleum experts must master. We are proud of our experts, as they take pride in creating our Marmoleum floors.
