Product Typification

Water- and frost-resistant floor tile adhesive.
Basis : Cement-based powder with a high synthetic binder content to be mixed with water.
Colour : Grey.

Product advantages:
  • Suitable for outdoor floors
  • Watertight when applied as an impervious layer
  • Flexible
  • Extremely suitable for tiles with an absorption capacity of 1% or less
  • Fast drying
  • High final bond strength
  • Does not deteriorate with age
  • Easy to apply
  • Low chromate

Performances

Aging : 704 Flextern does not deteriorate with age.
Classification : High flexible cement-based tile adhesive, which as far as final bond strength, moisture and frost-resistance complies with C2E, according to NEN EN 12004.
Consumption : 2-3.5 kg/m², depending on the smoothness of the subfloor and type of tile.
See also illustration of the spreaders.
Curing : Minimum 24 hours, depending on the subfloor and temperature.

Application

Application:
  • For fixing tiles on outdoor floors e.g. terraces and balconies.
  • Also very suitable for indoor floors, especially where a high (moisture) pressure is expected, e.g. swimming pool floors.
  • Because of the possibility of discoloration, not suitable for fixing glass-mosaic and light-coloured natural stone, such as marble. For these applications we recommend 720 Unicol.

Working Process

Storage : Store cool and dry in unopened packaging.
Mixing ratio : Add 25 kg 704 Flextern to approx. 6.5 litres of water.
Open time : Place the tiles within 15 to 20 minutes into the wet adhesive, depending on the subfloor and temperature.
Processing time : Apply the mixture within 60 minutes.
Waiting time : After mixing with water wait for a few minutes, stir once again and apply the mixture on the subfloor.
Shelf Life : 12 Months, in unopened packaging. After use close the open packaging well.
Application temperature : From 5° to 25 °C (temperature of the surrounding as well as the subfloor).

* The mentioned values have been established in our laboratory and must be considered as guidelines in view of possible variations in climatic circumstances, subfloor compositions and layer thickness.

Consumption:
2-3.5 kg/m², depending on the smoothness of the subfloor and type of tile.
See also illustration of the spreaders.

Substrate:

General:

  • The subfloor must have a good tensile and compression strength. The subfloor should also be smooth, dry and free from grease, dirt and dust, according to the requirements of DIN 18 352.
  • Detailling should be made in such way that infiltration is not possible.
  • When using the adhesive outdoors apply two layers of 730 Isoflex. Also remove all old ceramic finishing.

Power-floated concrete floors:

  • Remove the curing compound by sandpapering the floor and make the floor thereafter dust free.

Concrete floor as a subfloor for the cement screed:

  • Apply in this constructive concrete floor the required slope of 2%. In this way the cement screed can be applied in the same thickness everywhere.
  • To provide that moisture will enter the sides of the cement screed, the top of the constructive concrete floor has to lay minimum 100 mm above ground level.
  • When a water-resistant construction is required make the constructive concrete floor completely water- and dampproof with a roofing. Thereafter it is a floating cement screed.

Floating cement screed:

  • To increase the bending strength of the floor provide the floating cement screed with a rustproof reinforcement.
  • After installation and strickle off cover the floor with foil for a period of at least 8 days. This prevents that large form alterations will arise by a too fast (one-sided) drying. To reach a specified bend-/pullstrength the floor is not passable for at least 8 days.
  • Compartimentalise the floating cement screed between 2.5 and 5 meter through expansions of 7-10 mm width, depending on the colour and the size of the tile. Reckon with the fact that the lengths of the 4 sides may not differ more than factor 1.5 of each other.
  • Keep all connections to walls, columns etc. free through polystyrene strips.
  • The floor has to dry for at least 28 days.
  • Moisture percentage lower than 4.0 gew.%.

Connected cement screed:

  • After installation and strickle off cover the floor with foil for a period of at least 8 days. This prevents that large form alterations will arise by a too fast (one-sided) drying. To reach a specified bend-/pullstrength the floor is not passable for at least 8 days.
  • Keep all connections to walls, columns etc. free through polystyrene stripes.
  • The floor has to dry for at least 28 days.
  • Moisture percentage lower than 4.0 gew.%

User manual:
  • Add 25 kg of 704 Flextern to approx. 6.5 litres of cool and clean tap water and stir the mortar for 1 minute, by using an electric stirrer (approx. 600 rpm), to a smooth and homogeneous mixture.
  • After stirring wait for a few minutes and stir once again.
  • For the watertightness in wet areas, first apply an impervious layer of approx. 3 mm with a flat trowel. This layer has to dry for minimum 5 hours.
  • Fix tiles according to the “buttering floating” method. In this case make adhesive strips on the subfloor and apply adhesive on the back of the tile with a flat trowel.
  • Press the tiles within 20 minutes with a shuffling movement into the adhesive. Remove excess adhesive immediately from the joints.
  • Apply the mixed adhesive within 60 minutes. Do not add extra water!
  • Under normal circumstances, i.e. a temperature of 20 °C and a relative humidity of 65%, the joints may be filled after minimum 24 hours.

Spreading capacity/notched spreader for powder tile adhesives:

The smoothness of the subfloor and type of tile are determining for the adhesive spreader to be used. Selection of the notched spreader should be made in such way that a minimum adhesive contact of 80% is guaranteed (equally divided over the back of the tile). For outdoor purposes this contact must be 100%. Also counts for heavy-duty indoor floors, e.g. store and warehouse floors. Check the adhesive contact regularly.

Spreader no. 12, 6x6 mm : Spreading capacity approx. 2.0 kg/m²
Spreader no. 13, 8x8 mm : Spreading capacity approx. 2.7 kg/m²
Spreader no. 14, 10x10 mm : Spreading capacity approx. 3.5 kg/m²
Spreader no. 21, 8x8 mm BF : Spreading capacity approx. 3.5 kg/m²
